Between 2011 and 2013, the UK market for road haulage is anticipated to fluctuate with an overall trend for growth evident, post the current economic downturn. The goods lifted sector is expected to demonstrate overall real term growth of 5% between 2008 and 2013, to 1.89 billion tonnes in the latter year. The volume of goods moved is projected to reach 163.5 billion tonne kilometres in 2013, equivalent to a 4% growth in the year and of 7% in real terms compared with 2008. The downturn has and will continue to facilitate a reduction in economic activity and spending which will decrease demand for road haulage services. When economic growth returns to the UK economy as it is forecasted to in late 2010 or early 2011 there will be an increase in expenditure on goods that require road haulage such as durables and this will act as a large stimulus for the sector.
